It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, considering the waste waters and unpleasant smells but it’s not as bad as it sounds thanks to the many openings leading to the surface which reduce the disagreeable odors to some extent. The 2,300 km long sewer system through which 15 tons of waste water flow every day was the scene of the legendary movie The Third Man featuring Orson Welles.
This sewer system is a favorite filming site where many sequences for serials and musical spots were shot (the serial Inspector Rex, the musical spot for the song Jeanny performed by the famous Austrian musician Falco, etc.).
Besides following in the footsteps of movie characters, visitors can also learn about how the sewer system works and, after this unusual 45-minute tour, they can visit The Third Man museum and then see the movie in the Burgkino cinema. A special part of the tour is the passage through the “cholera canal” built in 1836, which is still in use. The canal was built because of the outbreak of cholera, which killed more than 2,000 people.
